Australian Medical Sheepskin
The Ultimate in Pressure Ulcer care and prevention.
CSIRO Study confirms Australian Medical Sheepskins prevent bed sores.
The Secret to the Therapeutic Value of Sheepskin
Pressure ulcers are a result of tissue breakdown due to prolonged compression
of tissue and the subsequent reduction of capillary blood flow in tissue
between skeletal prominences and the body's external environment.
Wool's unique properties of high density soft, springy and
resilient fibres, provide a cushion to distribute and relieve pressure
at vulnerable pressure points on the patient's body. The wool fibres
provide a soft and smooth surface to reduce strain on the patient's skin
and shear forces on the underlying tissue.
Infection control and sterilization
Medical sheepskins are in direct contact with the skin. Therefore, cleaning and
washing is of prime importance.
Washing for 6 minutes at 80°C (145°F), known as thermal disinfection,
is now recommended wherever possible. In addition to being convenient, thermal
disinfection also provides protection against chemical resistent bacteria.
Thermal Disinfection
The Australian Medical Sheepskin has been specifically designed to meet the
high temperature requirements for thermal disinfection, leading to reduction
in cross contamination.
A preventable and unneccesary problem
Pressure ulcers are preventable but are both common and costly. Costly in economic
terms, but costly in emotional terms. Discomfort and pain can affect both the
patient and carer.
